Meet Alecia Whitelaw.

Founder of Gourmet Juniors, Super Mum to two darling girls, and your new go-to guru when it comes to whipping up a meal or snack that will actually be eaten, and god forbid, enjoyed by your little ones.

Alecia kindly shares with us her top tips for every parent's eternal struggle - getting kids to try new foods.

When it comes to life's more difficult questions, i.e. pick Gosling or Hemsworth, for Alecia, her chocie of Gosling came down to a manicured whisker.

 

At Gourmet Juniors, what are your top three products on the market?

Our healthy Chicken Nuggets are our best seller. Filled with veggies, protein and calcium they are a winner with everyone.

 

Our Bolognaise Sauce comes in at number two. Again, filled with veggies (see a pattern here?!) it’s ready to add to your favoutite pasta. Our pick is spelt pasta as it’s a lot lower GI than traditional pasta.

 

Number three is our Slow Cooked Lamb Stew, a complete meal filled with veggies and the most tender lamb, it is a complete meal that can be pureed, chopped or eaten as is by kids from as young as six months.  

 

What are your tips for parents who have kids who’d rather run a mile than try one piece of broccoli?

The struggle is real but can be won!

My best tip is to involve your children in food preparation, shopping and even growing if possible. The more involvement they have, the greater their interest in food. Fuel their passion for healthy food early.   

Talk about good food and how it makes you feel. Food can be the source of so many conversations, from colours to nutrients and their benefits and even counting. The more exposure kids have to good food the more it will become the norm.

Be a good role model. Kids love to mimic their parents!

What are children’s favourite go to snack?

Apples! Although they never get finished. I now stew half eaten apples to add to oats in the morning. I detest food waste so I also freeze left over fruit to add to smoothies.

 

Sweet or Savoury? 

Savoury with a side of dark chocolate!

 

Ryan Gosling or Chris Hemsworth? 

Gosling by a manicured whisker (I really liked researching this question!)

 

If you could invite any 3 people to a dinner party, who would you invite and why?

What is your favourite way to switch off? 

Pilates! I’m not very good at being still to calm the mind so I use pilates as my meditation. 

 

It is 5pm somewhere..., what is your drink of choice? 

Champagne any time of day.

 

Would you rather not be able to drink coffee for three months, or eat chocolate for a year?  

I LOVE coffee, I look forward to my large, strong soy latte as I got to bed the night before and my mission in the morning is the get out of the door towalk to our local café ASAP to enjoy my morning indulgence (sometime that means the girls are in their jarmies!) 

 

One word to describe yourself…  

Determined.

 

Homemade Muesli Bars Recipe

With 2018 off to a flying start here is a great snack recipe, perfect for on the-go or lunchboxes as it is nut free. A recipe, so easy, our two year old can do it! These are suitable from about 18 months. 

 

1.5 cups oats 

1/2 cup pepitas 

1/2 cup shredded coconut 

1/4 cup linseeds 

1/4 cup sunflower seeds 

1/4 cup chia seeds 

1/2 cup coconut oil, melted

1/2 cup rice malt syrup, melted 

1/4 cup boiling water 

 

Preheat oven to 160 degrees. Line a 2cm deep tray with baking paper. Mix all dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Melt rice malt syrup and coconut oil over low heat in a saucepan. Add to dry ingredients and mix well. Then add boiling water. The mix should be quite wet. You may need to add more coconut oil. 

 

Pour mix into lined tray and press down thoroughly. Bake in oven for 30-35mins until golden. Allow to cool slightly, cut into bar shapes and then allow to cool fully. Enjoy!

 

Note- because these bars are free from refined sugar syrups used in most commercial bars they may be crumbly. I save the crumbles and enjoy as a granola!
